Programs: Seattle alliance outreach (sao) is an all-volunteer, nonsectarian medical outreach organization, whose mission is to provide support for the improvement of healthcare in impoverished areas of the world. In 2017, sao continued work that it has been conducting in ethiopia since 2010. Sao conducted numerous mission trips from seattle, wa and minneapolis, mn, in connection with teaching programs in otolaryngology, orthopedics, anesthesia, and vascular surgery. In addition, sao made significant progress in its work to assist in the establishment of a nonprofit, outpatient renal dialysis center of excellence (the first in ethiopia). Among other activities, sao prepared bilingual teaching manuals for use in connection with the training of nurses, patients, and their caregivers, in peritoneal dialysis technique. Sao put these manuals to use immediately, conducting training seminars to provide specialized training to nursed, and to renal patients interested in pd and their families/caregivers, respectively. Sao also taught and supervised pd cathether insertion technique to and by interested physicians. Sao volunteers affiliated with the university of washington school of medicine assisted in the preparation of protocols for the conduct of a initiation, ramp up, and conduct of a full-scale pd program in ethiopia. These protocols are reflected in an observational study program proposed to be conducted under the supervision of sao volunteers, which will meet u. S. Institutional review board standards.
