Mission: To provide intervention, life-skills education, and mentoring for adolescents at risk of facing serious challenges in their transition to a healthy adulthood.
Programs: Independent living skills group - youth attend a weekly life skills group facilitated by red wing youth outreach staff and community volunteers. The topics covered include: education, housing, health, team building, money management, post-secondary education, job readiness, relationship building and emotional intelligence. We focus on experiential education and community connections.
life strategies - youth are mentored in a thought provoking and creative process. Our youth workers inspire youth to overcome fears, identify values, set goals and take action in their life. The primary goal of mentoring is to increase skills to work towards self-sufficiency and success. Each youth will meet one hour weekly with their worker.
work experience - red wing youth outreach has developed a teen thrift-store, where youth gain work experience and social skills. Unemployment youth will participate in all facets of running the business from receiving donations and sorting clothes to sales and cashering. Youth complete an average of 100 hours in a paid internship, through workforce development, inc. To allow for application of the skills learned.
chemical dependency support group - a youth peer-to-peer support group that allows youth to open up in a safe environment and discuss how alchol or drug use has impacted their lives. A research based,cognitive-behavioral group program through hazelden's teen intervene is being used as an outline for this support group. Mental health support group - a partnership with the national alliance on mental illness(nami). Nami has provided red wing youth outreach staff and youth with training to facilitate our own youth peer-to-peer support group. You are able to talk openly about mental illness and how ir affects their lives. Big city mountaineers - red wing youth outreach has partnered with big city mountaineers(bcm) to bring a life-changing experience to at-risk teens. Bcm ia an agency in colorado that supports urban teens in successfully navigating a variety of wilderness adventures across the united states. Teens from the red wing area attend pre-expedition events to prepare them to embark on a week-long physically and emotionally demanding wilderness adventure in the boundary water canoe area.
