Mission: Red cottage montessori is a grass roots, parent driven, board directed, authentic montessori school offering montessori education for children 18 months - 9 years. Red cottage delivers pure montessori; a method that fully embraces a child's individuality, curiosity, ability to learn, and need to become a fully capable member of our diverse, complex world.
Programs: Red cottage montessori has three programs that make up the bulk of their services(toddler program, children's house program, and lower elementary program). During fiscal year 2017-2018, red cottage montessori school enrolled 57 children and provided a montessori education. 1. Red cottage's toddler program offers a safe, peaceful and nurturing community for the youngest children at our school. The prepared environment supports freedom of movement and uninterrupted time for concentration and focus on their work. A strong emphasis on independence and problem solving is encouraged. This classroom experience is often the first one a child has away from family or caregivers. Therefore patience and gentle encouragement are provided and consistency is adhered to while the children learn and play. Red cottage's toddler community is a half day program for children 18 mo - 3 years. For families who need extended care, red cottage offers an extended day until 2:30 which includes nap time. 2. Red cottage's children's program is for ages 3 to 6 years. Extended day program is for 4 to 6 yr olds by invitation of their guide when ready. Dr. Montessori developed the following areas of learning to support each child in her development to become healthy, active, engaged members of her community: practical life: activities in this area reflect everyday tasks performed in the home. Preparing food, arranging flowers, polishing various objects, watering plants and general care for the space give children a sense of ownership and empowerment from the first moment they enter the environment. By mastering these skills, children broaden their attention span, develop their motor coordination, and create life-long learning habits (ie every task is to be completed and completed well). Sensorial: the materials in this area are scientifically designed (based on the metric system) and give children opportunities to understand and discover the physical qualities of the world such as dimension, color, texture, and shape. By experiencing these concrete materials with their hands, children develop an abstract understanding of these concepts. Language: a diverse, hands-on, rich collection of language materials give children numerous opportunities to develop and enhance spoken language, vocabulary enrichment, writing, reading, and overall language appreciation. Mathematics: by incorporating concrete materials like rods and beads, children explore abstract mathematical concepts such as quantity, the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, the decimal system (units, tens, hundreds, thousands), and fractions. Research shows this hands-on approach gives children a solid, life-long sense of numbers. Other areas: additional materials give children the opportunity to pursue their individual interests in geography, art, music, and science and nature. Large motor activities, group discussions, storytelling, literature, and songs are also incorporated in the montessori day. Much time is devoted to learning outdoors and discovering what nature has to offer our world. With this constant exposure to the outdoors, children naturally appreciate nature of all sorts. 3. Red cottage's lower elementary program is for children is grades 1-3. The cirriculum follows the same five (5) areas of development identified in the children's house program above - i. E. , practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics, and other areas.
