Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Homeless & Housing, International, International Human Rights

Mission: The Rebuilding Alliance, a nonprofit organization, rebuilds homes and communities in regions of war and occupation. We advocate for government policies towards these regions based on human rights and international law. Through a mutual commitment to justice, we create alliances among our supporters, partners, and those who suffer injustice and violence, yet resist through rebuilding. Our projects are symbols of hope that help rebuild shattered communities and offer people around the world immediate ways to make peace, starting with the tangible support of a family's right to a home.

Programs: Our Campaigns: Gaza: The Rachel Corrie Rebuilding Campaign: According to Human Rights Watch, over 2500 Palestinian homes were demolished by the Israeli Army since Sept. 2000. We start our campaign in Gaza by rebuilding for the Nasrallah family, the family whom the late Rachel Corrie stood to protect from the Israeli bulldozer that threatened their home. The home is now nearly completed -- Gazan filmmaker Tamer Mansour, American filmmaker Ron Eggleton, and Cindy Corrie, Rachel?s mother, helped chronicle the rebuilding process in a series of film shorts. Soon we hope to hold a worldwide webcast from Gaza and Olympia! Jordan River Valley: Saving the Village of Al Aqabah. During our rebuilding of the kindergarten in Al Aqabah, the Israeli government issued demolition orders for the entire village including all homes, the mosque, and the medical center. We petitioned the Israeli Supreme Court to save the village as Israel invokes unilateral claim to the Jordan River Valley; East Jerusalem Mini Zoning Plan: nine neighbors in Beit Hanina. Work continues with Jewish and Palestinian urban planners to save their neighborhood by registering a mini-zoning plan with the Jerusalem municipality. Will the Municipality accept the plan? Maybe. Peacemakers with Disabilities: We offer three months of on the job training in the SF Bay Area to help people with disabilities learn Salesforce.com customer relationship management software to qualify for good jobs -- and in the process help the Rebuilding Alliance support our partners and donors through webcasts and speaking tours.

I met Donna of Rebuilding Alliance in Khan al-Ahmar, she was meeting with the leadership of this Bedouin Village and with the women to understand their concerns and fears, which she later turned into an advocacy campaign. With a local social worker, she gathered a group of children to make Pinwheels with messages of peace written on it. I felt like the community felt hopeful that people listen to them, and now I continue to follow Donna's work to bring these voices to the forefront of American consciousness.
