Programs: Youth development: the ymca is a leader in nurturing the potential of every child and teen. Every day, the ymca helps young people deepen positive values, their commitment to service; and their motivation to learn. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Our ymca programs, such as jump-start preschool, center street child care, upk, after school, gymnastics, youth fitness, swim lessons and youth sports offer a range of experiences that enrich cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. In 2017, the oneonta y was chosen to host the ny state ymca gymnastics meet, which was held at suny oneonta and hosted over 200 gymnasts. Another new collaboration was with the foothills performing arts center where 75 children participated in a 3 week summer arts program. The ymca provides programming to 1259 youth and teen members and an additional 410 through program only. All kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, under the guidance of people who care about them and believe in their potential. Keeping kids active and involved is part of our mission and 286 kids participated in y day camps, 95 kids attended pre k and 152 kids participated in before and after school care, 395 played in y youth leagues and 75 kids competed in our y swim and gymnastics teams. The y works closely with dss so that we can enable those requiring subsidies and direct financial assistance the opportunity to participate in developmental programming that would otherwise not be available. In 2017 the oneonta family ymca awarded $42,903 in memberships and programming assistance.
healthy living: the y is a leading voice in our community on health and well being. The ymca delivers health and well-being from the inside out - the spirit mind and body. The ymca provides over 3161 members with the supportive relationships and environments they need for their successful pursuit of health and well-being. This is particularly important as our nation struggles with an obesity crisis, families struggle with work/life balance and individuals search for personal fulfillment. We bring families together, and offer sport, recreational and social networks that build relationships and strengthen bonds. In addition to our health & wellness workout areas, they y offers fun & creative group exercise programs following our mission of healthy living. Our ymca instructors reach outside our walls, to ensure everyone gets a change to live healthy by offering free fitness classes in the community at places such as the local schools, community events. The oneonta ymca is a major community provider of senior fitness opportunities, offering our active older adults specialized fitness classes and unlike a typical gym, the y builds a vital social network of support and caring. In addition to just classes we host free senior socials to bring this precious population together for a day of exercise, healthy eating and socialization. Our programs are accessible, affordable and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities and income levels. In 2016 the oneonta family ymca awarded $42,903 in memberships and programming assistance.
social responsibility: the oneonta family ymca has been in our community since 1883, and we are an organization that offers our community many ways to be involved and a chance to give, join and volunteer. Strong communities don't just happen; they are the result of steady leadership and strong values provided by our y. Our ymca provides a variety of programs to develop personal educational/vocational/leadership skills, and we partner with other community organizations to identify and respond to community needs. A great example of the y responding to community needs is the collaboration with the city of oneonta. The city came to us as they could no longer offer programming as in the past and asked the y to help formulate solutions. We responded by offering professional services to run an afternoon school age program, swim team, swim lessons and managing the city outdoor pool where 8,882 people visited over the course of the summer and 163 kids learned safety around water with the y free saw program. The win/win situation gained the attention of local politicians and our program was visited by senator seward. The oneonta y is continually being looked at as defining the model for collaboration. In 2017 ymca programs, such as cpr/first aid, lifeguard training, and water safety instructor training successfully certified 37 lifeguards, 128 people in cpr and completed 58 first aid certifications in our community. 1069 swimming lessons were taught to kids in 2017. These are just examples of how our ymca develops social responsibility that strengthens our community and builds the foundation for future generations to thrive as well as works to make our community safer. We also believe that social responsibility means creating a needed social exchange between our senior citizens, many of which live alone. Each year we bring them together for a day focused just on them. We provide them with guest speakers from local agencies to discuss topics related to their needs and interest, lunch, games and wellness classes designed especially for their population. During the remainder of the year we collaborate with the office of the aging to provide residents of otsego county with open swim in our heated pool. In 2017 we engaged volunteers totaling over 3825 hours of service and the board members logged in an additional 575 hours of volunteer service. The oneonta family ymca works with many organizations to provide work study programming for their students and provide hands on work experience for student interns from both suny oneonta and hartwick college. The oneonta y recognizes the importance of working together and has the communities trust to convene, partner and support community collaborations with agencies such as the city of oneonta, oneonta city school district, walton and cooperstown schools, and the oneonta fire dept. In 2017, 255 donors of all types supported our cause and the annual campaign raised $34,606. Program sponsorship was $6,398, and additional foundation support accounted for an $18,472. $21,500 was contributed for capital projects. Community members and businesses also supported our programs and capital projects through other various types of opportunities and grants. With our doors open to all, the y brings together people from all ages and backgrounds and supports those who need us most. We take on the most urgent needs in the community and inspire a spirit of service in return and in 2017, the oneonta family ymca gave back to our community by providing $42,903 in membership and program scholarships and $5,673 in donated services and space to other organizations.
