Mission: R&D BioTech Alaska started back in 2014 (incorporated in 2016) as a part-time small water analysis for local and federal government reporting. We would routinely take water samples along with invasive species, soil and local botany examinations put them in a breakdown excel format and send them to local reporting agencies around the state of Alaska for yearly examination. With this business idea I decided to introduce the ability to teach others how to do this as well as work with others on their own project ideas and quickly learned that (like myself) people needed an outlet for their ideas and projects but didn’t have the help or ability to do this themselves. Using our own funding (working retail jobs, computer programming and science contracts) we were slowly able to buy equipment (spectral analysis, microscopes, basic lab equipment, computer hardware and software) to better work with others and with this created an open-source peripatetic laboratory. Since then, we have evolved into a non-profit that provides an on-the-go statewide learning laboratory that works with people on their own project ideas (new polymers, 3D printing, small scale design workshops, instant-stop roadblocks for local authorities) as well as our own projects (Nonfreezing concrete, soil made from plastic, plastic eating bacteria, natural food coatings, coffee enzymes, Crispr Cas9 gene variants for mice, etc.). With these project ideas came the next part in our journey, offering contract work and part-time internships so individuals could learn about the world around them as well as have a place where people could go to start their own projects and build on their own creative ideas, with the help and resources of our team and volunteers
