Causes: Centers to Support the Independence of Specific Populations, Human Services
Mission: Quincy asian resources, inc. 's ("qari") mission is to foster and improve the social, cultural, economic and civic lives of asian americans and their families to benefit quincy and its neighboring communities. Through collaborations and partnerships, we provide culturally competent services including adult education programs, youth development, and cultural events as well as information and referrals to public and other community organizations.
Programs: Adult education program:year-round, our adult education program offers courses to students in the morning and evening teaching english for speakers of other languages (esol). In the adult ed programs, immigrant students improved their english and other skills needed to thrive in the u. S. In addition to english skills, students have prepared for the workforce with tasks like job applications and mock interviews. The workplace education program provides english skills needed for both workplace and everyday living. Classes deliver on-site in the workplace, making classes available to many who would otherwise be unable to study. In partnership with jp fuji group, qari has designed and delivered contextualized english programs for two years. Besides jp fuji group, previous partners includes kam man food, and sunshine travel. Qari's workplace education programs provide the employee the opportunity to grasp the social, workforce and cultural aspects of the english language through the teaching of speaking and listening. Qari uses standardized testing - best plus to test the outcomes for the learning gains. The family literacy program offers free contextualized english and parenting skills for parents of children enrolled in quincy public schools. This year's family literacy program included a group of parents simultaneously studying both english and parenting skills components. The problems facing immigrant families are not only linguistic, but cultural as well. In many asian cultures, parents get their children to school and education is fully entrusted to teachers with no expectation of parental involvement. Accordingly, the content in the family literacy curriculum is divided into three main subject areas, or modules: supporting your child's learning at home, parent involvement at school, and navigating quincy public schools ("qps"). During fy2018, qari conducted three sessions of citizenship class. Those free citizenship class meets saturdays for 10 weeks in one semester. Topics in the citizenship class range from u. S. Government/geography to how to fill in the naturalization form n-400. Students also had a field trip to visit a uscis immigration office and to participate in mock interviews at the end of the semester to have a real-life experience on the interview process.
bilingual information and referral services:qari's community service desk provides services in english, cantonese, mandarin, taishanese, and fujianese to assist clients with various services on topics ranging from health care and public housing to child care, paths to higher education, and citizenship assistance. Clients receive assistance locating and completing forms, translating documents, and finding resources. Qari also provides survival english courses for asian elders, as well as cultural courses such as chinese painting. Qari provides information and referral services to clients. The most needed services are access to healthcare, housing, food and communication. Qari's community service representative assisted immigrant families with limited english proficiency on-site at quincy public schools' central registration to register their children for school and provide community resources to the new families. With volunteers and staff members' interpretation service hours, qari has helped families to communicate with quincy public school teachers and get to know their children's school life. Qari also offer survival english class in both mandarin and cantonese to elderly clients over 60 years old. Qari also works with local agencies, nonprofit partners such as the quincy housing authority, quincy community action programs, south shore elder services, and south shore mental health to improve services for asian immigrants. One of the approaches to improve our services is to collaborate with those agencies to train our staff on specific topics. In fy 2018, qari coordinated trainings to full-time staff and community service assistants on the topics of healthcare, citizenship, domestic violence, and mental health.
immigrant youth and family outreach program:youth development mission:qari youth programs enable positive youth development of middle and high school students through empowerment within a peer leadership model. Young people build socio-emotional and 21st-century skills to become active agents of social change in their communities and beyond. Youth servicecorps: the qari youth servicecorps (ysc) is a community engagement and leadership program for high school aged youth in the quincy and south shore communities. Each year, more than 300 youth volunteer for over 10,000 hours of service through the program. The youth servicecorps also provides workforce readiness, professional development, socio-emotional skill building through various workshops, events, and activities. Youth leadership is developed through an 8-12 person youth board. U&i mentoring:the goal of the program is to foster empowering youth relationships between recent immigrant middle school mentees and their high school mentors. By supporting the mentees' academic progress, their transition into high school, and their adjustment to life in the united states, our high school volunteers are exposed to responsible, adult roles of service to a younger and culturally diverse generation. Entrusted with the unique responsibilities found in their role as mentors, our high school volunteers not only learn communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, they gain marketable capital that will be invaluable to their future. Each year, the program serves 25 - 35 middle school youth. Qari works closely with the quincy public schools, south shore mental health and other community organizations to offer new student orientations, chinese-language parent orientations, and parenting classes targeting the recent immigrant population in middle and high schools. These programs and activities also introduce newcomers to programs qari has to offer.
civic engagement program:qari works with partners, south cove community health center, the association of asian pacific community health organizations (aapcho), and members of the api cans to educate, register and encourage api's to vote.
