Mission: To catalyze the transformation of public education in Southwestern Pennsylvania so that all children have access to high performing public schools.
Results: 1. Propel McKEESPORT was Allegheny County’s highest performing, high poverty school in 2007 2. 51% of students at Propel tested proficient or better on state tests (PSSA) compared to students in comparable district schools 3. Scores on the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT 10) climbed at all Propel schools in 2006-2007. Across all Propel schools, 54% of students were at above the median - up 4% from 2005-2006 4. Propel received almost 900 applications for its 2008-2009 admissions lottery; with space for only 300 of them 5. 95% of parents are giving our schools an A or B compared to just 64% in the National Gallup poll 6. Propel continues to serve a challenging student body. 79% are eligible for free or reduced price meals; 17% are receiving special education services 7. Propel’s student body is remarkably stable. Within year turnover is under 10%. Year to year turnover is also under 10% 8. Propel is working with local arts organizations such as Attack Theater, Civic Light Opera, Pittsburgh Dance Ensemble, Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theater, YMCA, CMU’s Growth Theater program and others, to offer students cultural enrichment 9. Propel smoothly had its first charter renewed and with permission to expand by opening a high school (Propel Andrew Street High School opening in Fall 2008) 10.
