Growing up my father couldn't read or write. Then a senior citizen in our community, on her on recondense, took the time to try to teach him basic literacy skills. I will never forget the patience and love she showed my father. I see that same love by the Executive Director, tutors and other board members at Project Literacy. They truly believe in the mission and go above and beyond to help increase the literacy levels in our community. They show that same love and patience with each student, that was shown to my father, regardless of their literacy needs. I am grateful to sit on this board such amazing people.
As a young college student, I was in the throes of deciding what to do with my life. A close friend, Audrey Millner, started the adult literacy program in Pittsylvania County. She hired me as a tutor and later as an instructor. When I saw the participants, who worked all day, come at night to learn, I was hooked. I have been a developmental reading instuctor for over 20 years. I later came to Project Literacy as a tutor, Board member, program director, and now Board president. Project Literacy enables people to enrich their lives as well as become stronger members of our community.
