I've been working with Gene and Marietta at the Priceless Parrot Preserve for a few months now. When I first contacted them I wasn't sure if they took volunteers but they were immediately friendly and appreciative of my offer to help. Gene and Marietta are extremely passionate about helping parrots, especially those who have been abused or neglected, and are very selfless in these pursuits. They work completely unpaid to keep the organization going, as do their children. They are also very passionate about educating people about parrot care- at events or when parrot owners call in. They know an incredible amount about parrots and how to care for each individual species (and even flock member). Each parrot has its own large cage (unless bonded to another parrot) with plenty of toys and gets individualized attention from Gene, Marietta, their children and volunteers. Some of the parrots are even allowed to roam around throughout the day. All of the parrots are fed proper healthy diets. This hard work and knowledge definitely pays off- some of the before and after stories for the birds they've taken are amazing. We need organizations like the Priceless Parrot Preserve given the lack of knowledge and attention given to the issue of unwanted or mistreated parrots in the US despite the fact that it is a serious and growing one.
