Mission: The presidential precinct's mission is to empower the next generation of global leaders through education, collaboration, and networking.
Programs: The presidential precinct is one of 20 original institutions selected by the department of state to host the prestigious mandela washington fellowship for young african leaders. The fellowship is highly competitive. For the 2017 application, over 64,000 young leaders applied for 1,000 fellowship positions. Each summer, the presidential precinct hosts a six-week civic leadership institute oriented toward fellows who are serving the public through non-governmental organizations, community based organizations, or volunteerism. Civic leadership institutes build technical and leadership capacity in areas such as citizenship, community building, economic development, grassroots activism, political organizing and leadership, and strategic problem solving. The precinct's class of 25 fellows participates in academic sessions, cultural and social activities, networking, and community service and engagement at all six of the precinct's partner sites.
annually, the presidential precinct hosts a global leadership forum. The topic of the forum varies based on the pressing issues affecting the global community. Depending on the year, the forum brings 30 - 40 young and emerging leaders from around the world to central virginia for programming on a particular topic. The 2017 global leadership forum, titled promoting gender equality in education, is focused on the un sustainable development goal: to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. "
in 2016 and 2017, the presidential precinct hosted young leaders of the americas initiative professional fellows. Each year, the presidential precinct selects 10 out of the 250 business and social entrepreneurs from latin america and the caribbean to travel to charlottesville to collaborate with counterparts in businesses and civil society organizations. Through this exchange program, fellows advance their entrepreneurial ideas and build leadership skills to effectively contribute to social and economic development in their communities. These dynamic young entrepreneurs from 10 different countries in the latin america and caribbean region spend four weeks in "entrepreneur-in-residence" placements with some of charlottesville's leading small businesses, startups, and nonprofit organizations.
