Mission: Potential energy adapts and scales technologies that improve lives in developing countries.
Programs: In 2014, the organization continued its work in sudan, distributing and selling over 5,000 high-efficiency, wood-burning cookstoves to women in the darfur region of the country. These cookstoves use the fuel, emit the smoke & cook twice as fast as traditional methods, helping to mitigate the death and disease attributed to cooking over open fires. Over 70% of stoves were sold, at a subsidized rate, as part of the organizations efforts to work towards greater community impact and financial sustainability. Potential energy expanded its reach to two additional states in darfur, working with new partners in these regions. It offered financing to 17 local community based organizations, and trained over 20 of them on how to market and sell the stove. Potential energy made it possible for stove sales agents to generate ongoing income for themselves and their teams. In addition, potential energy launched its work in ethiopia, introducing 600 stoves to the community. During this effort, it worked closely with researchers to roll out stoves sales in conjunction with rigorous monitoring and evaluation to study usage of the stoves as well as willingness to pay. It also launched a market research fellowship program, and evaluated the feasibility of entering 3 new markets in sub-saharan africa. Finally, potential energy tested new stove products and selected technologies to be deployed in the upcoming year.
