Mission: The pongo poetry project (pongo) teaches and mentors personal poetry by teens and adults who have suffered traumas such as abuse, neglect, and exposure to violence. To accomplish it's goals, pongo runs writing programs inside detention centers, homeless shelters, psychiatric hospitals, and other sites where trauma is a dominant theme for the residents. Pongo's primary purpose is to help authors understand their difficult feeling, find their strong voices, and address their life chanllenges and best hopes. Over 20 years, pongo has developed and taught its unique trauma-informed methods for facilitating writing around the country.
Programs: Pongo teaches and mentors personal poetry by people who have suffered traumas such as abuse, neglect and exposure to violence. In addition to providing direct service to teens and adults (often homeless), pongo teaches its methodology through training, a book, consultations and free web resouces. Pongo works with counselors, teachers, artists, university students and volunteers to help individuals start their own writing project on the pongo model.
