Causes: Education, Scholarships, Scholarships & Student Financial Aid
Mission: The mission of the National Tooling and Machining Foundation is to assume a leadership position in the training and development of future generations for the metalworking profession, while continuing to lead southwestern Pennsylvania’s custom manufacturing industry in achieving business success by providing a center of knowledge.
Target demographics: Our vision is for every student in Southwestern PA to understand, explore and consider manufacturing as a viable career option.
Direct beneficiaries per year: approximately 1000 high school students, over 60 local high schools in 13 counties across the southwestern Pennsylvania region.
Geographic areas served: southwestern Pennsylvania
Programs: The Pittsburgh Chapter National Tooling and Machining Foundation spear-headed efforts to bring a national student robotics program to the Pittsburgh region. Local manufacturers and educators joined forces in 2005, and with just 6 schools, and launched BotsIQ. Now, entering its thirteenth year, the program has exploded to include more than 60 schools and has its own fan base. Working with a robotics curriculum based on the National Curriculum Standards and Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Mechanical Engineering Methodology, southwestern Pennsylvania students are taught to design, machine, build and battle robots in a gladiator-style competition. The competition draws on students' knowledge of math, science, engineering and even public speaking. Perhaps most importantly, students see that building things is challenging, it's fun, and it's a potential career.
