Mission: Connecting you to the joy of reading and to information for lifelong learning. All activities within the 11 libraries of the pioneer library system (pls) are designed and delivered with a commitment to quality library service for every customer, regardless of age, circumstance or location.
Programs: Early literacy and reading readiness the annual pls summer reading program reaches readers and patrons of all ages across the three-county library system. More than 34,000 children, teens and adults participated in approximately 900 total programs. Touring programs by professional artists, musicians and storytellers filled our libraries to capacity. Partners for summer reading included the oklahoma arts council, the anne & henry zarrow foundation, the pioneer library system foundation, hitachi computers of america, inc. , and the kirkpatrick foundation. We also host activities for teens and circulated more than 850,000 books and materials for young children, teens and adults. Programs created for working families to participate in summer reading activities after work hours were hugely successful with some programs being duplicated to accommodate the large turnout of patrons wanting to participate.
reading of literature we held our eighth annual the big read program featuring true grit in partnership with the oklahoma humanities council, the university of oklahoma, the norman arts council, the anne & henry zarrow foundation and other local community partners. Approximately 2,000 books were distributed to constituents to participate in this system-wide celebration of the reading literature. Our efforts were recognized by visitnorman with the outstanding event award for 2014.
small business, workforce development and personal finance we marketed classes, collections and training kits to support small businesses and enhanced workforce development through computer literacy classes, resume preparation and training. Volunteer tutors assisted more than 220 adults with low reading and/or poor english skills through one- on-one tutoring, literacy classes and tanf. We are implementing citizenship corners via the oklahoma department of libraries and the u. S. Immigration service in our large branch libraries to assist patrons desiring to become u. S. Citizens. The fiscally fit boot camp series, in partnership with consumer credit counseling service (cccs) of central oklahoma, concluded last spring but due to the high quality of this program, we were invited to apply, and received, funds for another book camp series. This is under the auspices of a two-year grant from finra investor education program.
