Mission: The phoenix project's mission is to identify, prepare and empower the next generation of social entrepreneurs. We believe they can and will solve many of the world's social challenges. We believe the university experience is a critical stage when emerging leaders are most receptive to the education, mentoring and risk taking that will unleash their full potential as social entrepreneurs. We leverage our presence in the national capital region, a global hub of social innovation, information technology and policy-making. We benefit from the commitment to innovation of our partner, george mason university, virginia's largest institution of higher education and are creating a home for social entrepreneurs to transform their innovative ideas into transformed communities.
Programs: Social innovation program: the 6th annual social innovation program (sip) took place in fairfax, va during the summer of 2011 at george mason university. Sip is among the nation's premier models for identifying , educating and engaging our next generation of social innovators and includes both an academic and experiental session. This competitive program draws participants from around the world and increases participants' efficacay in 25 key competency measures by an average of between 75 and 300%.
accelerating social entrepreneurship conference: on november 10, 2011 more than 250 participants gathered in arlington, virginia to consider "accelerating social entrepreneurship in the age of austeriy". Senator mark warner, bill shore and mario morino headlined the event, which explored how the global economic crisis can provide opportunities to forge new approached to persiaiten problems.
service learning technology: in 2011, the phoenix project, in partnership with truist, launched avail, a ground-breaking web-based service-learning and social innovation platform, to a national audience. The phoenix project also managed a subgrant competition to virginia institutions of higher education to promote the use of avail in the commonwealth.
social innovation professionals: the phoenix project provided a variety of pro bono and discounted fee-based services to nonprofit, university and government clients through our consulting arm. We continued to lead university-community partnership building efforts in the economically distressed community of petersburg, virginia and focused our efforts to connect unniversity resources with community needs by facilitating skills-based projects that employed innovative startegies for solving persistent organizational problems.
