Causes: Philanthropy
Mission: Our mission at Philanthropy for America (PFA) is to develop, instill and cultivate a philanthropic culture among the Millennial generation by enlisting talented and passionate college graduates and young professionals to work for two years as PFA Fellows at a non-governmental, non-profit organization - PFA Partnered Organization - in the United States and to strengthen the movement for employment equity and income equality. In return, the PFA Partnered Organization receives 15 percent of the PFA Fellow’s monthly salary used to support the company’s mission and/or charitable giving activities in the organization. Founded in 2016 by American educator Roy Y. Chan, PFA seeks to reinvent and revolutionize how employers recruit, train and hire Millennials (age 18-34) in the 21st century by developing a platform for companies to enlist, equip and empower recent college graduates and young adults toward a career in business, education, development, management, social work, technology, among others. We aspire to be a leading source of young philanthropists, social entrepreneurs and humanitarians who compensate their time and wealth that best serves local, national, and/or international communities. The program's two-year innovative fellowship emphasizes training, coaching, experiential learning and public service.
Results: Baby Boomers are retiring and 80 million Millennials, the largest generation in American history, are taking the helm and shaking things up in a major way. By 2025, Millennials will make up as much as 75 percent of the entire U.S. workforce. Yet far too many companies are unwilling to hire recent college graduates and/or young professionals who lack full-time work experience in their respective profession. At Philanthropy for America (PFA), our vision is to recruit, reinvigorate and reshape Millennials with the heart, passion and commitment to make fundamental and programmatic changes at every level of their profession. Typically Americans born between 1982 and 2002 are the most educated, tech-savvy individuals and now make up one-third of the current U.S. population. Already over 50% of Millennial-led companies are completely rewriting established industries (Uber, Airbnb, The Empowerment Plan, uBeam, etc). Despite being far more educated than Generation X, today’s Millennials also face high levels of unemployment and underemployment in the labor market, particularly after completing higher education. To address this inequity, PFA aspires to engage the next generation of PFA Fellows in a conversation around what is means to become leading humanitarians, philanthropists and global leaders in their local, national and international communities. At the same time, we seek to help PFA Partnered Organizations empower young adults in the workplace through causes that enhance company culture and leadership. Together, we are confident that all Millennials, when given the proper resources and opportunities, can make a positive difference in society at the completion of a college degree.
