Mission: The mission of the pennsylvania bar foundation is to support programs that increase the public's understanding of the law and promote equal access to justice.
Programs: Loan repayment assistance programin september of 2010, the pennsylvania bar foundation, in conjunction with the pennsylvania iolta board, launched a loan repayment assistance program for attorneys employed by iolta-funded organizations that provide free civil legal aid to indigent pennsylvanians. The program has two goals: 1) to assist legal aid attorneys in better managing their educational debt so they can afford to choose and remain in public service careers; and 2) to help civil legal aid organizations attract and retain skilled and talented lawyers in public service. To date, the program has provided loan repayment assistance to more than 250 attorneys and is budgeted to award more than a million dollars in loan assistance during its third three year cycle.
celebrate the constitution - designed to help students in grades k - 12 become better citizens, the celebrate the constitution program teams lawyers and judges with teachers to help students celebrate and learn about the us constitution. In addition to matching lawyer and judge volunteers with participating schools, the program assists teachers by providing lesson plans, classroom ideas and constitution-related materials. The annual program kicks off in september during the national constitution week celebration and continues throughout the fall. To date, schools in nearly all of pennsylvania's 67 counties have taken part in the program. Over 150,000 student participants of diverse backgrounds have "signed the constitution, and more than 30,000 pocket us constitutions are distributed to students and educators annually.
pro bono - the pro bono fund supports the expansion of access to justice for the neediest among us. Foundation funding supports training programs for attorneys seeking to provide pro bono assistance, and underwrites the presentation of the pba pro bono award(s) presented annually to individual lawyers and judges who have made an outstanding contribution to the provision of legal services to the indigent without charge.
