Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Health, Health Care, International, International Development, Philanthropy, Public & Societal Benefit

Mission: Founded on September 5, 1968, PAHO Foundation delivers its mission by mobilizing resources, convening leaders and collaborating with partners to develop, evaluate and foster the implementation of regionally relevant public health models. These models are intended to have a profound and positive impact on seemingly intractable problems undermining the health and prosperity of people in the Americas. Our goal is to ensure the development of sustainable models that can be replicated and scaled across the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region.

Results: PAHO Foundation is involved in a variety of projects that improve the health and lives of people throughout the Americas. In the past, through the generosity of Merck & Co., Inc., PAHO Foundation has partnered in the donation of Mectizan tablets since 1989, enough for nearly eight million treatments. PAHO Foundation has recently partnered with IFPMA to strengthen women's cancer prevention and control in the Americas.

Target demographics: improve the health and wellbeing of the people of the Americas.

Geographic areas served: Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the United States and Canada.

Programs: To achieve the goals of our targeted efforts, PAHO Foundation manages programs in three ongoing focus areas: 1. non-communicable diseases, 2. communicable diseases, and 3. health systems strengthening.

The PAHO Foundation is highly knowledgeable and staffed with trained public health professionals that work passionately towards bettering the health and wellness of people in the Americas. The Foundation has certainly grown in the last few years and has only bettered itself and its mission. Although the staff is small, they are fierce. The organization has extremely tenacious leadership that provide support to the organization and its staff. If there is ever an opportunity to work with this Foundation, whether it be employment or partnership... DO IT! 5 stars for the PAHO Foundation!

I have worked with PAHO Foundation and even interned for them, and all of my experiences have been nothing short from fantastic! The staff and leadership are passionate and committed to advancing public health in the Americas and work tirelessly to achieve that mission.

They are small but growing quickly! The organization has recently relocated to Atlanta, GA to better position itself within the LAC and global health community, which I think is a great idea with the many public health entities in the area. It is astounding how much work they have accomplished over the years (i.e. strengthening health systems, promoting women's health, and combating neglected tropical diseases like Zika), so I definitely think they are worth checking out!

I am a donor and staff member here at the Foundation. These past few years have been a transition for the organization but the Foundation has received clean audits throughout the years, new leadership in our president and board chair and members, and are poised to help public health in the Americas and our preferred partner, the Pan American Health Organization. They are an incredible group of public health heroes committed to sustainable public health solutions.

For years this nonprofit has been trying to determine what its mission and focus are but never really gets there. It has rebranded itself at least four times since the early 2000s. Especially when it lost PALTEX, it provides essentially no value to PAHO. PAHO has its own staff to promote it and reach out to corporations for partnerships.
