Thanks to REAL School Gardens and much to my child's delight, watermelons were harvested in our school gardens this Fall! The children got to follow a complete cycle of growth, from seed to fruit, while enjoying a hands on approach. They got to use their math skills (measuring the melons over time, for example) and writing skills (labeling plants and documenting the experience). They got to use scientific inquiry (why is his watermelon bigger than mine) and draw pictures. This is just a small example of what REAL School Gardens is all about. On a much larger scale, they foster multi-dimensional and powerful learning experiences in outdoor learning environments.
