Mission: Opportunity america is a washington-based nonprofit promoting economic mobility work, skills, careers, ownership and entrepreneurship for poor and working americans. The organizations principal activities are research, policy development, dissemination of policy ideas and working to build consensus around policy proposals.
Programs: Among the organizations top accomplishments in 2017, it convened a group of stakeholders to propose reforms to higher education funding that would rectify the current imbalance between traditional academic courses and career-focused programs. Other activities included hosting a small policy dinner with a member of the house committee on education and the workforce and two policy luncheons with senators on the senate health, education and pensions committee. Opportunity america also manages a coalition of employers and employer associations working to improve policy on workforce issues. Its core goals: amplifying the employer voice on career education, creating space for partnerships between employers and educators and leveling the playing field to put workforce education more on a par with traditional academic instruction.
