Mission: Enriching lives & communities one home at a time. One roof helps to strengthen the foundations of our communities by providing housing services and building and sustaining affordable homes and healthy neighborhoods. We make home a better place by helping lower income people find and fix their homes, by providing housing development services to the community, and by coordinating housing activity across neighborhoods in duluth. This work helps one roof fulfill our mission of ensuring access to sustainable and affordable housing for everyone.
Programs: Community land trust (clt) program: development and stewardship of permanently affordable clt homes for purchase by low-moderate income households to ensure affordable homeownership opportunities will exist in our community for future generations. Current focus is on acquisition-rehabilitation and sale of foreclosed properties in duluth, proctor, hermantown, and cloquet. New construction in duluth and grand marais has recently been added to the housing development portfolio. In 2017 one roof helped 19 households purchase a clt home. These inlcuded 3 acquisition/rehab homes and 16 resale homes.
multifamily housing development services: turn-key housing development services for affordable rental housing owners, managers and service providers to provide affordable rental housing opportunities and prevent homelessness of lower income households in our community. The most recent project was the construction on gateway towers, a 150 unit building that houses lower income people in duluth. Construction began in 2016 and was completed in 2017. Also in 2017, funds were committed for one project in lutsen where four 4-plexes will be completed by the end of 2018. One roof conducted preliminary work on several new projects for which funding applications will be submitted in 2018.
tenant-landlord connection (tlc) program: this line of business provides education, information, and problem solving assistance as a way to improve tenant-landlord relations and decrease the amount of housing evictions in our community. The mission of tlc is to ensure that stable rental housing exists by educating existing and potential landlords and tenants regarding their respective rights and responsibilities and by meditating disputes between landlords and tenants. In 2017, the tlc served a total of 213 households and prevented 32 evictions.
homebuyer education: homestretch classes and pre/post purchase counseling and education to ensure that lower income homeowners are prepared to be successful in their homeownership endeavors. Homestretch classes are offered 14 times per year. In 2017, 212 households completed the homestretch class and 136 households utilized homebuyer counseling service.
