Programs: Georgia's coast is unlike any place on earth and one hundred miles has been working with statewide media networks to inform our citizens of the significance of our marshes, forests, communities and economies. Our statewide communications campaign involves a variety of pieces in magazines, such as georgia trend, savannah magazine, and the golden isles magazine. Our advertisements were heard throughout the state on georgia public broadcasting; our community leaders radio show on joy 100 gospel radio station was heard throughout the southeast; and we were proud sponsors and participants in many education events such as the georgia department of natural resources coastfest, jekyll island's greenscreen, and multiple national conferences that showcase the significance of our coast.
in 2014, one hundred miles emerged as an influential and trusted leader on statewide policies that impact coastal georgia. In response to an unexpected change in state policy, one hundred miles led a campaign to establish in law a protective 25-foot buffer on all georgia's salt marshes. As the member of the leadership team of the statewide group of water advocates - the georgia water coalition - one hundred miles coordinated the coalition, citizens groups and others in a multi-faceted approach to respond to the change of policy that occurred in april 2014. Over the 12-month campaign, one hundred miles conducted face-to-face meetings with state legislators, local officials, state agency heads and staff, hosted forums and presentations for citizens and groups throughout the state; published articles, editorials and opinion pieces in newspapers, magazines and social media; and built a lasting leadership network of local advocates working toward our shared goal to reinstate the buffer on our marshes. The campaign was successful and the georgia general assembly passed legislation during the 2015 session that establishes a 25-foot buffer on all georgia marshes.
in 2014, one hundred miles coordinated a taskforce of statewide conservation leaders to develop a vision that will inform coastal conservation advocacy efforts in georgia. The project called coastal vision 2050 resulted in a series of engaging, easy-to-understand communication tools for decision-makers on every level. We developed a series of maps that illustrate various land use conditions, including biological species diversity, conserved land, and growth, as well as future scenarios based on various responses to land use efforts. We are working to ensure that the future scenarios included in the coastal vision 2050 effort inform the development of strategies to engage local governments in a discussion about conservation-friendly conservation policies. As a part of this effort, one hundred miles led local conservation initiatives including, but not limited to: 1) envision glynn a local partnership led by 30 glynn county leaders striving to plan for greenspace, new development, public infrastructure, and redevelopment opportunities in a way that balances economic development and conservation to preserve our quality of life. 2) spaceport camden one hundred miles is leading the regionaleffort to increase public understanding and engagement in the proposed development of a new rocket launch facility in camden county. 3) offshore oil and gas exploration one hundred miles is working to unify local opposition to plans to expand offshore oil and gas exploration and development in georgia. If allowed, these activities will transform our coast and threaten wildlife and local jobs. One hundred miles has led a statewide campaign opposing the federal plans and has worked with city and county governments to inform them of the plans and pass resolutions opposing the federal agencies efforts.
