To instill a passion for learning among underperforming elementary students by providing exceptional reading instruction outside of regular school hours
Results: To date, Omosaze has provided services to 1,000 students. Students who regularly attended Omosaze’s Reading Saturday made positive and noteworthy gains in their reading ability: -93% of the grades one and two students gained in knowledge of basic sight vocabulary. -81% of all students improved their comprehension of grade-level text as measured by the Cloze procedure. -80% of students met or exceeded the expected performance on Georgia’s Reading CRCT or a Reading Benchmark Test. -94% of students earned promotion to the next grade-level.
Target demographics: Students in 1st-3rd grades, attending Title I schools, who are reading behind grade-level.
Geographic areas served: Cobb County, GA
Programs: Reading Saturday, our signature program, is a reading intervention program targeted at 1st - 3rd graders. Students receive instruction in small group formats led by certified teachers. Our teachers utilize a comprehensive reading curriculum with a focus on vocabulary development, word recognition skills and reading comprehension strategies. For 1st grade students the program also include a one-on-one session with a volunteer. The program is administered at school sites and Omosaze's Teasley Learning Center.
