Programs: On the way: child passenger safety safe kids oklahoma's flagship program addresses car safety for children. Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of injury and death to children in oklahoma and nationwide. Safety in and around cars consists of car seat safety, heatstroke prevention, and prevention of frontover and backovers as well. Safe kids oklahoma, along side safe kids worldwide, certifies national child passenger safety technicians in classes held statewide to equip professionals to educate parents on proper installation of care safety seats. We also provide car seats to families through our partnerships with other community and government agencies (continued) who provide assistance to needy families. Families who receive car seats always receive education along with the resources. We deploy volunteers statewide to address vehicle safety. At-play: water and bicycle safety safe kids provides water safety education through to major programs: we and wacky water wahoo and the brittany project. Water safety education is provided to 1,500 elementary age inner city children who may otherwise not be exposed to safe swimming. Partnerships with oklahoma city community college aquatics, the ymca of greater oklahoma city, schools for healthy lifestyles, and white water make these events possible. The brittany project is a long-standing safe kids program that provides free life jackets to army corps of engineers lakes across oklahoma. These life jackets are placed in designated swimming areas of the lakes to be used free of charge to patrons of the lake. Bicyle safety education is also a part of our "at play" initiative. Through education and helmet distribution, over 1,500 oklahoma kids receive free bike helmets, fittings, and bike safety education. At home: home safety safe kids, in partnership with fire departments statewide, provide smoke alarms and free installation for families identified as 'at risk' of fire. We equip fire departments with smoke alarms and local fire departments provide free in-home installation to their communities.
