Mission: Ohana Preservation Foundation (“Ohana”) serves vulnerable children, their families, and caregivers through individual counseling and programs, incorporating equine-assisted activities, horticulture, and expressive arts. This includes youth suffering from anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation; those currently in juvenile centers; those admitted to hospice or have a significant illness; those in need of grief support who have lost a parent, child, or sibling; caregivers struggling with compassion fatigue; and those who have experienced trauma, such as bullying, sexual assault and human trafficking.
Target demographics: Vulnerable children, their families, and caregivers.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Over 800 people through referrals from the Loudoun County Youth Services, DC Rape Center, and the Family Advocacy Outreach Network of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. We also support several Forensic Nurse teams that work directly with sexual assault victims and simply through word of mouth and networking connections through Loudoun County Public Schools.
Geographic areas served: Northern VA and DC Communities.
Programs: We have a team of incredible trauma-informed therapists, who see clients at our preserve. These professionals integrate equine-assisted activities, art, and horticulture into their therapy sessions—creating a tangible, powerful reality where we have found that many who suffer from trauma are able to find healing in nature, instead of a traditional office setting. We combine the clinical expertise of licensed therapists, with innovative modalities like art, horticulture, and equine-assisted activities. Ohana builds confidence and trust through animals, showing nature’s healing power in a safe place, where special everlasting bonds are formed.
