Mission: Ogallala commons, inc. , is a nonprofit organization offering education and leadership to build vibrant communities in the great plains region, by reinvigorating the commonwealth which form the foundation for human and natural communities. Our region's commonwealth can be identiried as water and mineral cycle, renewable energy, education, health and recreation, the arts, history, a sense of place, wildlife, the foodshed, and spirituality. These are 12 essential foundations for community vitality. Ogallala commons focuses on 4 activities to regenerate these commonwealths:
Programs: Workforce & leader development: in 2017, ogallala commons, inc. , (oci) and its community partners continued our community internship & apprenticeship program by providing work experience, skill development, and local career exploration for a total of 54 interns and 1 apprentice, consisting of high school students, college and older adults in 7 states. Additionally, oci created a lakota homecoming learning cohort for 5 interns at pine ridge and rosebud reservations in south dakota.
stewarding natural resources: oci carries out natural resource conservation education by conducting 12 playa festivals and river festivals in new mexico, kansas and texas that involved elementary, middle, and high school students, and educated more than 900 students and teachers. Oci resumed the stewarding our aquifer (soa) initiative, an 8 state social media campaign to motivate actions towards preserving rather than exhausting our commonwealth of water. In addition, oci conducted 3 playa management field days in texas.
youth engagement program: oci expanded its work in youth engagement programs by increasing the southeast colorado youth engagement project to 9 rural counties (baca,bent, cheyenne, crowley, kiowa, otero, prowers, lincoln and kit carson counties). Additionally, oci launched a youth etrepreneur camp for 24 middle school students in eastern new mexico (curry county), and a youth entrepreneur fair in canyon, tx for 30 high school youth.
other programs: rebuilding local food systems: oci expanded it's local llano social media campaign for public education regarding local food producers and options for procuring locally-grown, nutrient-dense food in the texas panhandle-south plains and eastern new mexico.
