Mission: Preservation of the ocracoke island heritage
Results: The Odd Fellow Lodge is a 30x40 building. It will be used as a public park, visitors center, public restrooms, and 2nd floor office spaces for NGO's. This is a historic building which can service the community and visitors of Ocracoke. The community hosts over 2000 visitors per day and needs more public spaces available for the local veteran community and tourism on the island. Currently, the island has no public bathrooms besides an outhouse. This location will also house handicap accessible restrooms for the public, in addition to a visitors center, outdoor eating areas and community park.
Target demographics: The OPS, formed in 1983 to preserve the unique island culture and history for the enjoyment and education of the community and its visitors. OPS purchased the Island Inn to help the community of Ocracoke.
Geographic areas served: OPS’s mission (a) To encourage, assist, advise, and participate in the identification, preservation, and restoration of significant Ocracoke Island structures, buildings, districts, and objects of local interest. (b) To cooperate with other agencies, organizations and individuals, public and private in attaining objectives of interest to the Ocracoke Preservation Society, Inc. (c) To purchase, accept, hold and administer gifts of money, securities or other property of whatsoever character for the purpose of carrying out its program. To acquire, administer, hold in custody, restore, reconstruct, preserve, maintain, and dispose of historic buildings, grounds, monuments, graves, or other sites, places or objects, to erect historical markers and monuments, and to take other steps in order to attain its objectives.
Programs: Maintain historic ocracoke home as museum, library and to promote ocracoke heritage thru special events during the year.
