Causes: Crime & Law, Legal Services
Mission: Oasis legal services proudly provides quality legal immigration services to under-represented low-income groups with a focus on lgbtqia+ communities. By acknowledging, respecting, and honoring their struggles, we empower immigrants so that dignity grows and integrity blooms.
Programs: Affirmative asylum: our lgbtqia+ affirmative asylum program is only 1 year old but it is already the second-largest lgbtqia+ asylum program in the country, to our knowledge. Since may 16, 2017 we have filed over 180 new asylum applications. We represented 69 clients at asylum interviews, of which 58 received asylum grants and 11 received recommended approvals. Our asylum approval rate in the past year was 100%.
residency: our residency program focuses on helping asylees adjust their status to legal permanent resident. Since may 16, 2017 we have filed over 115 residency cases and have had 39 approved adjustments of status. The remainder of the filed cases are still pending.
naturalization: our naturalization program focuses on helping legal permanent residents become citizens. Most of the clients we help with naturalization are asylees who were clients of oasis staff members at a former organization. Since may 16, 2018 we have filed 19 naturalization cases and 2 clients have received approval. The remainder of the cases are still pending.
oasis focuses largely on affirmative asylum and follow-up services such as asylee relative petitions, residency, and citizenship, although we provide other legal services less commonly to the lgbtqia+ community as well. These services include k-visas (fiancee petitions), i-130s (family petitions), tps, travel documents, vawa, and other immigration services few and far between.
