Mission: San diego oasis is a nonprofit organization serving people 50+ throughout the san diego region. Our community service benefits all ages and communities. Our mission is to promote successful aging through a three-fold approach: lifelong learning, healthy living and intergenerational community service. San diego oasis is a supporting organization of the oasis institute located in st. Louis, mo and part of a national oasis network of organizations and partnerships that carry out the oasis mission in communities across the country.
Programs: Health:san diego oasis offers a proactive health promotion strategy to reduce health risks in older adults by helping them understand and address their changing health needs. The curriculum consists of nationally recognized, evidence-based programs, such as healthy habits for adults (hha) program, a series of one-hour workshops focused on improving nutrinion and increasing physical activity. These free results-focused sessions include a nutrition lessons, a low-impact exercise demonstration, and a healthy living guide. Healthy aging program effectiveness is being measured, in part, by administering the 8-foot-and-go method. Throughout the san diego county, in its full time centers and partner locations, san diego oasis offers a broad variety of exercise and fitness classes, and health education programs in areas of nutrition, exercise, disease management, sensory changes, mental health, memory and general health promotion.
education for lifelong learning:san diego oasis provides educational programs for a broad and diverse audience of lifelong learners. Topics range from creative writing, foreign languages, history, philosophy, art, music and book discussions to technology, current events and consumer affairs. Programs are offered in locations throughout the community, including oasis education centers, libraries, community centers and senior centers.
volunteer service:san diego oasis offers a wide variety of volunteer experiences, including intergenerational mentoring programs that address literacy. Through the one-on-one oasis intergenerational tutoring program, trained volunteers serve as reading tutors for primary grade students in twelve area school districts. Volunteers also serve in administrative roles, as course instructors, oasis center volunteers, and ambassadors.
