Mission: Northwest regional oasis was an educational organization that strengthened communities by providing lifelong learning and service opportunities that inspired diverse audiences of mature adults to pursue vibrant, healthy, productive and meaningful lives. Programs in the arts, humanities, health, technology and volunteer service provided stimulating opportunities for mature adults to continue their personal growth and serve their communities. Northwest regional oasis was a supporting organization of the oasis institute which directs a national network of oasis programs in 43 communities.
Programs: Education - northwest regional oasis designed educational programs in the area of arts and humanities for a diverse audience of lifelong learners. Topics ranged from history, to various topics on the arts, to creative writing.
health - northwest regional oasis focused on increasing awareness, knowledge and skills of older adults to address their individual health needs. The classes emphasized physical activities and exercise, as well as other health issues facing older adults.
volunteer - northwest regional oasis offered a variety of ways for older adults to enrich their lives through volunteer service. The oasis intergenerational tutoring program trained volunteer tutors and matched them with at risk primary grade children to build reading and language skills. The program also helped build the students' confidence and positive attitudes towards learning. Opportunities were also provided to volunteers to assist in running the center, serving as instructors, registering participants for classes, database entry and answering phones. Volunteers could have also participated in committees relating to class selections, marketing and fundraising.
technology - northwest regional oasis provided a variety of computer classes for its participants including microsoft word, introduction to computers, introduction to the internet, exploring google and resume preparation. This connections curriculum was developed by the oasis institute and focused on assisting older adults to improve their technological skills and to make it possible for them to enter or re-enter the workforce.
