Mission: The st. Louis older adult enrichment program is an educational organization that strengthens communities by providing lifelong learning and service opportunities that inspire diverse audiences of mature adults to pursue vibrant, healthy, productive and meaningful lives. Programs in the arts, humanities, health, technology and volunteer service provide stimulating opportunities for mature adults to continue their personal growth and serve their communities. The st. Louis older adult enrichment program is an affiliate of the oasis institute which directs a national network of 27 oasis centers.
Programs: Health - the st. Louis program utilizes the oasis institute health education programs that provide behavior-change classes emphasizing increasing awareness, knowledge and skills for older adults to address their individual health needs. The curriculum consists of nationally developed evidence-based programs in the areas of nutrition, exercise, disease management, sensory changes, mental health, memory, general health promotion, as well as locally offered courses.
education - the st. Louis program provides educational programs in arts, humanities, music, health, technology and volunteer opportunities for a broad audience of lifelong learners. Topics range from creative writing, yoga, music therapy, philosophy, contemporary issues, art appreciation and discussion groups. The st. Louis program partners with several diverse community organizations throughout the st. Louis metropolitan region to bring oasis educational programming to a number of public and private locations. Currently oasis has active partnerships with over 80 community partners receiving or providing educational programs in concert with st. Louis oasis. Additionally, the community outreach program offers a program entitled "friends. " this program incorporates individuals with developmental disabilities into standard oasis programming. This program has a high volunteer component and serves both the city and the county.
volunteer service - the st. Louis program offers a wide variety of volunteer experiences; the largest of which is the tutoring program. The st. Louis tutoring program cooperates with 36 school districts and 289 schools to offer the oasis intergenerational tutoring program. This program matches trained volunteer tutors with primary grade children to build reading and language skills, confidence and positive attitudes toward learning. Volunteers also serve as proofreaders, administrative staff, instructors, class coordinators, computer instructors, health facilitators, peer counselors, speakers-bureau and storytellers.
