NYdeVolunteer is providing a multicultural volunteer experience on multiple levels. Founder Noriko Hino has done a tremendous job of tapping an under utilized resource--the population of Japanese expatriates in the NY area--and focusing their desire to connect with and contribute to their American community by providing activities and other structures for volunteering. e.g., The Spa Day project where they go to nursing homes and spend the day with elderly residents helping them put on make-up and do other things to feel good about themselves; and the Japan After School Program, where they bring Japanese culture experts such as sushi chefs, musicians and other artisans to the Parks Department-sponsored after school programs in poorer neighborhoods. They expose the kids to a culture otherwise inaccessible to them and give them an opportunity to interact with people very different from themselves. Yet even as they share their Japanese culture with the NY community, NYdeVolunteer is also a pioneer in introducing an American-style volunteer philosophy into Japanese culture. The system of non-profits taking up good causes, fundraising and gathering volunteers is far less common in Japan at present. And Noriko Hino and NYdeVolunteer is laying a foundation and creating a model for future Japanese groups to follow. In other words, the seeds that Noriko and NYdeVolunteer are planting now will bear significant fruit in the future.
