Causes: Environment, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection
Mission: Northeastern minnesotans for wilderness is the region based advocacy group created by area residents to protect the bwcaw and other wild places.
Programs: Northeastern minnesotans for wilderness (nmw) leads a national campaign to protect the boundary waters canoe area wilderness and the larger rainy river drainage basin from sulfide-ore copper mining. Pollution from proposed copper mining near the boundary waters canoe area wilderness and in the drainage basin would flow into a national wilderness area (boundary waters canoe area wilderness), ontarios wilderness park (quetico provincial park), and a national park (voyageurs national park). A ban on copper mining in the drainage basin would ensure the long-term ecological health of these three nationally significant lakeland areas. Nmw has engaged multiple groups in this advocacy and education effort, including conservation organizations, hunting and fishing groups, wilderness-edge businesses, businesses nationwide, and other organizations and groups. Nmws approach has been to educate the public and policymakers through the use of modern science of the quetico-superior ecosystem and of sulfide-ore mining and through accurate mapping of the ecosystem and proposed mine districts. Nmw operates an education center, called sustainable ely, near the location of proposed mine districts. Through these endeavors, nmw works to protect the boundary waters canoe area wilderness, ontarios quetico provincial park, and voyageurs national park. Nmws goal: nmw seeks permanent protection of the rainy river drainage basin from sulfide-ore copper mining
