Causes: Farm Bureaus & Granges, Food
Mission: The north carolina farmworkers' project (ncfp) exists to promote the organization of farmworkers so that they can find solutions to their problems collectively, to encourage political participation and to give farmworkers the tools to work to improve their living conditions.
Programs: The farmworker health clinic program is designed to ensure that farmworkers and their families have knowledge of and access to health services for acute care, chronic illness and preventive care. In partnership with the benson area medical center (bamc), clinics are offered specifically for farmworkers one night a week and a mobile medical unit provides medical services and over-the-counter medicines to workers at various locations. Ncfp reaches out to farmworkers to inform them of the services available, perform basic health assessments and educate farmworkers about various health topics such as green tobacco sickness, heat illness, pesticide safety and sexually transmitted diseases through individual and group presentations. Ncfp schedules appointments as needed and provides transportation to the clinics, interpretation services, and follow-up visits to ensure that prescribed medication and referrals to specialists have been obtained. In 2017, we reached over 2,700 farmworkers in six counties and facilitated 840 medical appointments and 90 dental care appointments. We trained 16 farmworkers in two health topics, who then taught more than 200 of their peers about these topics.
aca outreach & enrollment program - this year ncfp offered education about affordable care act insurance plans and the us insurance system in general to more than 1,000 h2a farmworkers who were potentially eligible for insurance. We facilitated then enrollment of more than 200 of these workers. We also provided follow-up with enrolled farmworkers to make sure they understood how to maintain their insurance plans, and conducted an insurance utilization training with all enrolled workers. We facilitated physical appointments with 45 enrolled workers.
wfu - the nc farmworkers' project conducts community-based research in partnership with wake forest university on topics important to farmworkers, including levels of pesticide exposure and effects of exposure, housing conditions, food security, and many more. Nc farmworkers' project helps connect wfu with farmworker communities for research, gives feedback on research topics and methods, and disseminates information back to farmworkers in ways that they can use.
farmworker advocacy network (fan) is a statewide coalition that uses policy advocacy campaigns as an effective way to promote long-term agricultural reforms for field and poultry processing workers in north carolina. Through fan, a diverse group of nonprofit, government, and worker organizations identify key topics of concern to the predominantly immigrant farmworker population in nc, introduce policies around these key topics, influence agencies to increase enforcement of laws protecting these workers, and inform and involve worker leaders and student activists in policy advocacy campaigns. Member organizations also work on raising public awareness of farmworker issues. Since july 2016, the nc farmworkers' project has been the lead organization for fan; we coordinate the coalition and manage funds for the group.
