Mission: The norman mailer center, a non-profit organization for educational purposes, has been established to honor norman mailer. The center will keep alive the endangered, serious writers, bring writers together for workshops, seminars, lectures, readings and conferences, offer fellowships, stipends, and scholarships for those in need, produce a literary publication, reach out to the community and make visiting writers available to schools & organizations, and offer residency for visiting professionals.
Programs: Fellowships/workshops/residency - the goals of the norman mailer program are to bring aspiring writers together with distinguished educators and writers in a series of seminars, readings and lectures to advance the skill and art of writing, and to encourage, mentor and inspire young aspiring writers. The summer fellowship program will be the center's primary activity and will be held in provincetown, massachusetts at the home of the late norman mailer. Seven fellows were chosen for a four-week residency in the program. The fellows will be granted full tuition, use of a bicycle, residence in a condominium with a full kitchen, and $700 per month for meals during the fellowship. In return, they are expected to bring and work on a thirty page sample of a work in progress literature, attend a minimum of fifteen hours of seminars, discussions and conferences each week, attend two lunches per week with their peer fellows to discuss their progress on their written projects, attend one evening guest lecture per week and complete a writing project. Workshops last twelve weeks and consists of seven people per week who discuss the various aspects of creative writing. Residency portion last sixteen weeks. A winter fellowship is also being held for up to four mid-career, experienced and distinguished writers to spend any length of time from october through april in the mailer residence in order to conduct their own independent writing. These fellows were provided with free housing at the mailer residence, but no other expenses or stipends were provided.
national writing awards - the center awards a nation writing award of $2,500 to $5,000 for outstanding writing achievement to students each year: one in high school,one in community college and one in college. The center is partnered with the national council of teachers of english, which is uniquely positioned to judge submitted entries, and to identify final candidates for the award.
