Causes: Education, Student Services
Mission: Empowering educators to teach students the skills they need to become smart, active consumers of news and other information and engaged, informed participants in civic life.
Programs: The news literacy project, a nonpartisan national education nonprofit, empowers educators to provide students in middle school and high school with the skills they need to discern fact from fiction and become smart, active consumers of news and other information and engaged, informed participants in civic life. Our primary offering is the checkology virtual classroom, an immersive resource through which students learn how to navigate today's challenging information landscape by mastering the core skills and concepts of news literacy. The platform equips students with the tools to interpret the news and other information that shape their lives. News literacy teaches that all information is not created equal. Our programs help young people use the aspirational standards of quality journalism to determine what they should trust, share and act on. They also help to develop an understanding of the importance of the first amendment and a free press in a democracy, especially the watchdog role.
