Mission: We maintain that the key to breaking the cycle of homelessness is not only to provide short-term assistance to homeless families and veterans, but to work at eliminating its root causes so these individuals can become, and remain, self-supporting. We identify, and then respond to, those at-risk with programs that provide educational, technical and emotional support. This empowers these families and veterans, enabling them to function independently. Working in collaboration with institutions in the public and private sector, new ground works with existing agencies to better respond to the growing needs and challenges of long island's homeless population.
Programs: Through the long term housing program (lthp), new ground social workers assist homeless veterans, parents and children improve various life skills and education levels so they can increase their household incomes and eventually secure an independent and self-sufficient future. Each family/veteran is assigned a master level social worker to provide intensive social work services, assisting them with outlining goals to achieve while in the program to ensure they increase their income, improve their credit report, and increase their education to allow them to afford a home of their own when they graduate from the lthp. Social workers provide assistance in areas of self-esteem, problem solving, conflict resolution, parenting, anger management, coping skills, crisis management, career development, employment assistance and more.
the reading all stars program was developed to assist homeless children ranging from kindergarten 12th grade as well as some adults in the lthp and jsp. Homeless children have statistically been found to read below grade level thus affecting their overall academic performance. This program improves basic reading skills including comprehension, vocabulary, silent reading skills, and more. A reading specialist/tutor works with each student to ensure improvement in these areas. The student utilizes a computerized reading program to also improve these reading skills. Each participants progress is recorded and monitored through the online program and tutor oversight to gauge progress and determine areas for greater assistance and support.
launched in april 2012, the jumpstart program provides the same intensive education services and social work assistance to an additional five-ten families who are on the wait list for entrance into the long term housing program. Every jsp family meets with their new ground social worker on a weekly basis, to get a jump start on working toward their outlined goals for future self-sufficiency and independence. These families are homeless and awaiting placement into a housing unit should they be accepted into the lthp. Parents in the households work on goals of financial literacy, education advancement and employment while children receive education assistance through new grounds many education programs.
