Causes: Health, Pediatrics Research
Mission: The mission of the nj chapter, american academy of pediatrics, inc is to attain physical, mental and social health and well-being for all infants, adolescents and young adults. To accomplish this mission, the njaap shall support the professional needs of its members.
Programs: Zika - education program supports timely communication with providers regarding cdc/njdoh recommendations and guidance: 1) extraction of zika data from medical records and various databases to provide the necessary clinical and demographic information on eligible pregnant women and infants for the cdc's rapid ascertainment of targeted birth defects and the us zika pregnancy registry and 2) provided zika-related education to pediatric and obstetrical providers in multiple practice settings. Highlights include: hosting the "from ald to zika: newborn screening and surveillance in nj" conference (154 in-person attendees and 28 attendees via livestream simulcast); hosting a live webinar entitled "ask the zika experts which drew 127 participants; and providing latest zika information from cdc and njdoh to over 1700 njaap members and to all 50 nj birthing hospitals via email blasts and in-person visits.
early childhood immunization (njin) - provide education to the public, healthcare professionals, and policymakers about vaccine safety and benefits. Published and distributed two monthly immunization newsletters to a combined audience of over 2,000 members of the new jersey immunization network and the new jersey chapter, american academy of pediatrics. Conducted a hub and spoke collaborative project among chapters within aap district 3 to improve the capacity of participating chapters to conduct quality improvement initiatives with member practices and to improve hpv immunization rates within participating practices.
pulse ox - provided web-based education to over 700 nurses for newborn screening of critical congenital heart diseases; reviewed and analyzed all failed newborn screenings reported to the nj birth defects registry and forwarded findings for potential life-saving intervention. Published nj guidance for implementing and reporting for critical congenital heart defect screening in the nicu.
