Mission: To carry on, support, and operate facilities for fundamental and applied scientific research into the physical and chemical processes, and the interactions of these processes, that underlie nervous system function including behavior and mental activity; to carry on and support educational programs concerning such research, and to perform and do all other acts incidental to and in furtherance of such scientific research and education, all in furtherance of the purposes of neurosciences research foundation, incorporated (nrf), a sec. 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) organization. Nsc and nrf work closely together to carry out activities under the name of the neurosciences institute. Certain activities, such as fundraising, are carried out only by nrf. Major support for the research activities is done through nsc. Nrf and nsc share the same management, operation and space. In order to fully understand the financial status of the enterprise, forms 990 of nrf and nsc must be considered together.
Programs: The experimental and theoretical research program aims to understand the fundamental principles underlying brain function with potential applications of the results to ameliorate human disorders and improve life. The range of research areas includes the molecular details of nerve cell physiology and the effects of various drugs thereupon, the genetic bases of appetite and sleep control, the neurophysiology and genetics of behavior, the mechanisms by which we understand music and language, and the biological bases of consciousness. Functional computer models of various brain areas are used to control robot-like devices that can interact with the world and learn from their experience, and, at the same time, provide insights into how the brain works. The research results are published in a variety of scientific journals, and researchers present talks about their work at various institutions and scientific meetings.
