Mission: With the help of its volunteers, neighbors, inc. Will strive to reduce poverty, promote self-sufficiency and build community.
Programs: Emergency assistance - neighbors, inc. Provides food, clothing, and other assistance to families not able to provide for themselves. Services include a clothes closet and thrift store, providing school supplies to needy children, holiday assistance to poor families, nutritional assistance to mothers, children and seniors, a food shelf and emergency grants for rent, medical prescriptions, utility bills, daycare costs, transportation and similar emergencies. Neighbors, inc. Programs and services are provided by hundreds of volunteers serving thousands of hours annually. Statistics for 2014 are:food shelf: served 18,079 people and delivered 638,641 pounds of food. Christmas programs: provided christmas presents, clothing and food to 923 families. Clothes closet: provided 2,239 individuals with vouchers to shop for free. Federal government's commodity distribution mac and naps programs: neighbors, inc. Provided boxes of food to 23 mothers and their children. 1,109 boxes of food were distributed to low income seniors. Neighbors, inc. Collects day-old bakery products from several large stores in the area and makes bakery products available to all who wish to help themselves on a first-come first-served basis. In 2014 the bakery shelf provided 187,955 pounds of food to 31,320 people. Neighbors, inc. Matches up people who have furniture they no longer want or need with persons who need furniture. In 2014 neighbors, inc. Matched 173 donors and recipients.
supportive assistance includes transportation services provided by volunteer drivers for persons needing transportation to medical and other appointments; tele-care, which is a daily reassurance call to people living alone, and follow up checks if needed. Transportation program: in 2014, neighbors, inc. Provided 2,305 people with rides, totaling 30021 miles. Telecare program: volunteers placed 3,526 daily reassurance calls to 137 people in 2014. The come as you are program attendance varies, but averaged over 75 people during the course of the year; meetings were twice a month from september through june. In 2014, 96 volunteers provided 568 hours of service, building positive relationships with participants, playing games, and passing out snacks. Community presentations: neighbors, inc. Staff regularly reaches out to community groups. Each year 30 to 40 presentations are given. The summer meal program: the summer meal program was created when neighbors partnered with the federal government summer feeding program, st. Paul public schools, and 14 churches in order to provide meals to children attending summer school in two suburban school districts. In 2014, 277 volunteers served 44,711 meals, including both breakfast and lunch at four local elementary, middle and high schools. Service learning: service learning is a neighbors program in which the organization's director of volunteer programs, volunteers and staff speak directly with young people in schools and faith organizations about poverty and hunger. The staff members help the students understand how to organize and implement food drives, then encourage the students to deliver the food they collect directly to the neighbors food shelf. Garlough-covington collaborative: garlough-covington collaborative is a partnership among covington court apartments, garlough elementary school, neighbors and several other organizations. The program provides summer-long educational, social and nutritional support to garlough students, most of whom come from low-income families or families that are recent immigrants to the u. S. Students learn about topics like hygiene and nutrition; conduct volunteer projects; and work on maintaining school skills.
