Mission:
Using ateaching and learning strategy called service-learning, NID’s mission is toprepare youth for civic responsibility and service to others, enabling youngpeople to become capable, contributing members of society. Since theorganization’s founding in 1987, we have empowered students to apply academicskills as they address problems of concern to them in their schools andcommunities. We accomplish this by training and supporting teachers as theylearn to integrate service-learning with their classroom practices.
Geographic areas served: primarily Philadelphia region
Programs: We work in two primary ways: with students, facilitating our program in a limited number of classrooms, and with educators, conducting professional development workshops that enable them to integrate our service learning framework with their classroom curriculum. The two components are interrelated and each shapes the substance and methodology of the other. Whether facilitated by NID staff or a classroom teacher, our approach shows students that their opinions matter, their concerns are valid and their voices can inspire change.
