Mission: The mission of Prevent Blindness Indiana (PBI) is to prevent blindness and preserve sight for Indiana residents. One in four school aged children have an undiagnosed vision impairment. Since 80 percent of what a child learns is done visually, this means children are unprepared to learn. There is a federal mandate that requires a vision screening for children in kindergarten or 1st, 3rd and 8th grades. However, there is no state or federal funding to support this initiative. With their rapidly expanding roles, school nurses and social workers lack the time and manpower to accomplish these screenings as required. In this situation, PBI assists in recruiting and training volunteers, provides the necessary equipment and helps provide vision screenings for these children. PBI also provides vision screenings for adults in Indiana. All outcomes data from the screening events are recorded in a secure database.
