Mission: Our mission is to build inclusive STEM communities across the United States. Fundamental to these communities are the significant, inspirational connections we foster between the individuals who have received national recognition for excellence in STEM and today’s diverse generation of college and high school students. Together they will pave the way for a more equitable future in science and technology. Our vision is to be a driving force in creating a world in which the diversity of American society is reflected in the recipients of all prestigious STEM honors, including future Laureate classes of the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
Target demographics: Undergraduate students, young STEM professionals, members of STEM communities from underrepresented groups.
Geographic areas served: All around the United States
Programs: Through our inSTEM mentoring program and the Unscripted Series, we aim to build resilient and diverse STEM communities at academic institutions across the country. We want students to be both inspired to pursue careers in STEM as well as prepared with hard skills for the challenges they will inevitably face on that path. Our programming provides these things and more for the students who are underrepresented in STEM communities. To ensure success in our efforts, the foundation relies on our partners to support us in our efforts and bring about healthy change. Our core work focuses on reaching students during one of the most vulnerable parts of the STEM pipeline - an undergraduate student’s journey from enrollment to graduation in STEM. The high attrition rate of first-year undergraduate students, especially those from underrepresented groups, perpetuates a representation problem in collegiate and post-collegiate STEM communities. We believe that intervention at this point in a student’s journey is critical. Through our programming as well as partnerships with academia, government, and industry, we can provide a vastly expanded support network and improved access to resources for these students. Most uniquely, however, we are able to give students access to the top minds in STEM who can speak to the challenges students face and share similar lived experiences. These connections to STEM experts, in addition to effective mentoring, community building, and training, give students the tools and the inspiration they need to succeed. We believe that broad appreciation for science and technology makes it easier for scientists and innovators to fund, apply, and earn recognition for their work. To that end, we provide in-person experiences that highlight the technical and deeply human elements of STEM work. We also host the most comprehensive online database of information and stories about the National Medal Laureates, a collection of more than 700 profiles, photos, interviews, videos, and interactive modules bringing us all closer to the source of STEM genius.
