Mission: The National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana is the major statewide voluntary non-profit health organization dedicated to preventing kidney disease, improving the health and well-being of individuals affected by this disease and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.
The NKFL provides vital patient and community services, conducts extensive public and professional education, advocates for patients through legislative action, and supports local kidney research to identify new treatments.
Programs: Our programs and services include emergency financial assistance to patients; “Safe Rides with Uber Health” for patients who need transportation to/from dialysis; research and training for physicians and other health professionals; virtual classroom curriculum, “Kidneys in the Classroom”, for children in 3rd – 6th grades; online resources for information about kidney disease and organ donation; weekly posts on social media to engage the public and provide Q&A with healthcare professionals; and the promotion of living organ donation.
Public health education: education of the public through media campaigns about the causes, symptoms and treatment of kidney disease through a free patient helpline offering support for people with kidney disease, caregivers, organ donors or transplant recipients; free telephone support program connecting those affected by kidney disease with an informed mentor who can speak to concerns firsthand, and mobile applications for patients. The foundation conducted extensive social media, online and print campaigns and participated in community health fairs reaching over 30% of the state's population.
Patient Services: free community based screenings for those at high-risk for kidney disease. Testing to mark staging of kidney disease and provide clinical action plans to stop the progression of kidney disease, thus reducing the number of patients requiring dialysis. The screened individuals are provided with results and clinical action plans to share with their physicians. Financial assistance was also provided to patients for utilities, nutritional supplements, medical devices and housing.
Community Services: developing community awareness of the importance of organ donation and how lives are saved through this process. Donate life and "Big Ask:Big Give" materials were distributed to over 5,000 individuals during events throughout the year and through online campaigns. Our signature community-based fundraising programs mobilize community support around kidney disease and serve as positive, family friendly rallies, letting each community know about the importance of kidney health risk reduction, advocacy issues and kidney/organ donation.
