Mission: The association's mission includes improving the business conditions for retail stores that sell tobacco products located throughout the united states of america, providing information to association members about federal, state and local regulations and laws regarding the sale, advertising, promotion, regulation and taxation of tobacco products and how to comply with such regulations and laws, and assisting association members in responding to proposed federal, state and local regulations or legislation that may impact the sale, advertising, promotion, regulation and taxation of tobacco products.
Programs: During 2017, the association continued as a sponsoring organization in conjunction with the we card retail store clerk training programs that teach store clerks how to prevent the sale of tobacco to minors.
the association monitors and informs all 60,0000 retail store members about local, state and federal legislation that would impact their stores. This monitoring is publicized in the association's the nato news bulletin, which is an electronic newsletter bulletin sent to members via e-mail approximately once a week. In addition, local, state and federal legislative updates are published on nato's website (www. Natocentral. Org).
the association assisted retail members in 30 states in contacting their state legislators regarding pending legislation that related to their retail tobacco business. The bills included proposed tobacco excise tax increases and smoking restrictions in public places. Also, the association monitored and assisted member stores in approximately 100 cities throughout the country to respond to proposed local tobacco restrictions.
