I have been in the field for 39 years and have had the good fortune to spend the last 13 of that at Hopewell. It is a truly special place where meaningful work, community, nature, and creative arts merge with best practice clinical services to bring about transformative healing and positive changes in adults diagnosed with mental illnesses on a 326 acre working farm in the tranquil Amish country of northeast Ohio.
It has been my pleasure to observe the community growth at Hopewell. Seeing individuals who have their own unique struggles and stories come together and provide one another with comfort and a safe space is truly amazing. Hopewell considers the community to be the therapy and engagement in the farm brings lasting friendships, new insights into the self, and development of skills needed to successfully complete each day. The atmosphere is friendly, compassionate and inclusive to those from all walks of life. Each community member has the opportunity to find their place and be themselves.
Hopewell is a therapeutic farm community for adults with mental illness. It is located in Mesopotamia, Ohio, approximately 60 miles east of downtown Cleveland. Hopewell is a 300-acre working farm on whcih residents (clients) assume responsibility for the majority of all daily work. Residents' diagnoses typically are schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder or depression. Hopewell's unique, holistic model of care is based on the healing power of nature, meaningful work and community. When adults (ages 18 years and older) have responsibilities within the larger community, spend time daily with nature (animals, forests, flowers, produce gardens), enjoy physical exercise and good nutrition, and are helped by a caring, expert clinical staff, they experience increased self-esteem, learn to manage their illness, and become able to move on to more independent living situations.
Hopewell is one of only a handful of therapeutic farm communities in the United States, and the only one of its kind in Ohio. In 2013, it served 80 residents. Hopewell has been providing hope and healing for individuals with serious mental illness since 1996. Visit www.hopewell.cc.
