Programs: SUMMER RESIDENT CAMP PROGRAM - This program cares for children from various agencies, churches, unions, and private families, primarily from the 5 boroughs of New York City and its surrounding downstate suburbs. Our staff represents not only young adults from their neighborhoods, but from all over the world. The children receive an educational and recreational program that works towards developing ethnic harmony, environmental stewardship, community service and spiritual growth in an atmosphere of acceptance and love. All of this is done under a Christian umbrella, though the typical summer serves children of all faiths and creeds. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM In this program we work with both public and private schools from Long Island to Albany. Our professional staff is hired on a per diem basis. Camp Herrlich is an exceptional educational setting where children learn about environmental stewardship. Recognized by BOCES as an authorized environmental education facility, our teachers and programs are highly regarded in the NY Metropolitan area. This program is recognized as one of the best in Environmental Education. SUMMER DAY CAMP PROGRAM This program cares for children from the local Carmel School District community. The children experience a daily program that includes boating, swimming, fishing, arts & crafts, field games and horse back riding. They interact with children and staff from all walks of life and from all over the world. They camp out under the stars and get to play a game of basketball with the city kids like they have never played before. They have an opportunity to share their fishing skills with children who have never baited a line, or seen a live fish swim by them. We have been running this program in conjunction with the summer resident program since 1990. RETREATS Our limited retreat facility serves primarily churches and not-for-profit organizations from the metropolitan New York area. Churches have been coming here since 1928. Most every weekend from September to June is booked, sometimes years in advance. Church youth groups have made Camp Herrlich a part of their Christian youth experience.CAMP AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM - CASP cares for the local middle school children in an educational and recreational program after school here at camp. We are now serving 50 children, Monday through Friday during the school year. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM - AASP offers services at Matthew Paterson Elementary School and Kent Elementary School. The use of the school facilities offers a wealth of exciting end educational opportunities for children including: playground facilities, computer lab, library, arts and crafts, homework and tutoring areas. Some of the activities include, special speakers and presenters, violence prevention workshops and activities, peer mediation program, character development days, community field trips, to Camp Herrlich and the Patterson Library, Personal Educational Growth Opportunities and much more. The AASP program is made possible in part by a generous grant from the New York State of Office of Children and Family Services and The After School Corporation. This program was developed by Camp Herrlich in association with the Carmel Central School District.PROJECT LEAD The LEAD program is designed to help Eighth graders become community leaders. Eighth graders from the George Fischer Middle School meet weekly with camp facilitators to work on a variety of skills including public speaking and conflict resolution. The end of each semester culminates with a community project designed and implemented by LEAD students.
