Mountain Alliance is an excellent organization that teaches responsibility, leadership and respect for community and the environment to local teens, while providing cost free fun. These kids hike, bike, repel, walk dogs, paddle, and play. They also clean and maintain local hiking trails and water ways and other service-oriented activities in our community . Their funding has been reduced consistently over the past few years. Let's keep this essential organization alive!
I have known some of the kids who went through this program. I have to say, It instills a confidence and independence in the students that go through this program. It empowers them to solve problems for themselves and they come out better for it.
I also know some of the staff over there and they are a dedicated group that truly care about the kids and the families they work with.
Keep up the great work guys!
We have been a strong supporter of Mountain Alliance for years...they are Celebrating 25 YEARS of successfully propelling young adults into the world as strong leaders and stewards of the earth! These amazing teens complete 1,000's of hours of service each school year, participate many adventure based trips and gain knowledge throughout these experiences on how to become competent leaders amongst their peers and within their communities. The best program I've ever seen or heard about for high school students. It's based at a high school in a rural area, but involves partnerships with local nonprofits and other local businesses, as well as the university. On an almost daily basis, Mountain Alliance engages high school students in outdoor activities and service projects. High school students of all kinds -- all interests, abilities, backgrounds, personalities, etc. -- get together to do just about everything that is active and constructive. Activities are free and open to all Watauga High School students, and often include outdoor cooking, backpacking, donut making, defense classes, mountain biking, rock climbing, caving, trail building, team building, building fences for a horse rescue, cleaning cages at the humane society, cooking for a homeless shelter, and on and on. Mountain Alliance is so valuable for the community as well as for all of the kids themselves.
