Programs: The mt. Lebanon aqua club (mlac) a competitive swim team in western pennsylvania. For over 50 years, our coaching staff has offered unparalleled instruction to swimmers of all ages and abilities. From nationally and internationally ranked swimmers to children who have mastered basic swimming skills and are ready for a greater challenge, we have a program that fits your child's needs. Swimmers who learn correct swimming technique from the very beginning are stronger and therefore safer swimmers throughout their life. It is our goal to develop confident, safe swimmers who will enjoy the sport whether they go on to join a competitive team or just join friends at the pool. Our staff of professional coaches train and supervise a team of high school and college age instructors. We are very proud of the quality programs we offer to the community of mt. Lebanon. Competitive swimming - mt. Lebanon aqua club swimmers are divided into five practice groups based on ability level: stingray, dolphin, barracuda, marlin, and shark. Swimmers participate in practices with their groups and compete in local and national meets based on age groups defined by usa swimming. Below please find a brief description of each group. Tryouts are required for all swimmers who are considering year-round competitive swimming with mlac. Information on tryouts and the team can be found in the swim team menu. Please note: while we strive to make the criteria for participation in each group as objective as possible, these criteria are guidelines and exceptions will occasionally be made based on the best judgment of our age group and head club coaches. Minnows - the minnows is the pre-competitive swim team of the mt. Lebanon aqua club (mlac). Minnows team practices take place in fall (sept-dec) and winter (jan-mar). Swimmers on the minnows team will be coached by the mlac coaching staff. The focus of this team is stroke technique and development. Swimmers eligible for the minnows team must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke without assistance. Minnows practices are held in the mt. Lebanon high school indoor pool. The minnows team will be divided into two groups:- silver minnows practice one day per week- gold minnows group practices two days per weekat each of the practices, we will have different levels of minnows in the pool which will be grouped by the coach based on ability. As swimmers improve on the minnows swim team, they may try out for the year-round swim team. The minnows program is typically held for 8 weeks in the fall and winter sessions, and then as a "piranhas training camp" in the spring to prepare for our piranhas summer swim team which many minnows choose to join. Learn to swim - learn to swim lessons are offered seasonally for children 4-18 years old. Lessons take place at the mt. Lebanon high school indoor pool for all sessions with the exception of the summer when the lessons are held at the outdoor pool behind the mt. Lebanon recreation department. For your child to get the best from these lessons, he or she should be able to hold onto the side of the pool, go to an instructor easily, and be able to pay attention in a group. Our learn to swim program is designed to take the very beginning, but willing, swimmer and teach them the basics of swimming ability. It will enhance and refine stroke development for the more advanced swimmer. The program is a five-level swimming program designed to progress the swimmer through techniques necessary for proper stroke development. All swimmers begin in level one and proceed at their own pace. During the lessons, instructors will have swimmers evaluated when they feel that they have successfully achieved the skills necessary to move to the next level. We also offer parent child for 1-5 year olds who need a little extra help in the water to get introduced to the water and start getting them acclimated to swimming and learning safety skills to help prevent drowning. Piranhas - piranhas swim team is a competitive swim program for children 14 years old and younger as of june 1. The swimmer must have basic stroke ability and be able to swim at least one length (25 yards) of the pool in freestyle and backstroke. The program runs at the mt. Lebanon outdoor pool for 6-7 weeks in june and july with weekday practices from 9:45 to 11:00 am. There are five optional meets, held on weekday evenings and saturday mornings. The piranhas compete in the ams summer swim league against teams from bethel park, upper st. Clair, and peter's twp. Masters program - the mlac masters swim program is open to adult swimmers age 18 and over of any ability. Masters coaches provide leveled workouts dependent upon the time requirements and ability of the master's swimmer. Practices are staffed by our coaches from the mlac professional coaching staff to work with our masters team to develop as competitive swimmers, tri-athletes, or lifelong swimmers. Our master's program currently runs year-round from september through august. In the months of september through may, masters practice short course indoor at mt. Lebanon high school on monday, tuesday, wednesday,thursday and saturday morning. June through august, the team practices long course outdoor at the mt. Lebanon community pool. Registration is offered full-season, monthly, and walk-in rates. College swim program - the mlac college swim program is open to college swimmers currently enrolled in college and competing with a collegiate swimming program. College swimmers have the opportunity to work with our mlac coaches over the breaks and may compete with mlac in swim meets if desired (additional meet entry fees will apply). Mlac master's team or with the shark (senior) group during assigned mlac practices (see practice schedule for details). Swimmers must be currently registered usa swimming members as part of a collegiate swimming program or must register as a usms swimmer. Adult lap swim - adult lap swim will be held monday, wednesday, and fridays from 8:00pm-10:00pm and saturdays from 12:00pm -4:00pm starting september 28th. There will be 4-5 lanes available for lap swimming for 18 and older swimmers. You must be registered to swim at this time there is no drop in option. Adult learn to swim - according to the centers for disease control, 37 percent of american adults can't swim the length of a pool, which puts them at risk of being one of the 10 people who drown every day in the united states. Whether you are looking to learn how to swim or learn how to swim better we can help you. Water aerobics - mt. Lebanon aqua club is now offering water aerobics. Water aerobics will be tuesday's from 8:00pm-9:00pm. Classes will be at the mount lebanon high school. The pool is about 81 degrees. Which is great when you being active. This is coed with music and lots of fun and exercise with great people. Water aerobics, also called aqua aerobics, use the natural resistance and buoyancy of water against your body to provide a wide variety of conditioning activity. No swimming is required in water aerobics, and flotation devices are used frequently. Water exercise helps increase your energy, stamina and strength - and it is a healthy way to cool off in the summer. Before starting an aerobics routine or class, check with your health care professional. Class is coed & will take place at the mt. Lebanon high school pooldiving - mt. Lebanon aqua club is now offering diving. Diving practice will be one tuesday 7:30-9:00pm/wednesday practice from 7:00-8:30pm. New programsunderwater hockey - mt. Lebanon aqua club is now offering underwater hockey, also known as octopush (mainly in the united kingdom) is a globally played limited-contact sport in which two teams compete to manoeuvre a puck across the bottom of a swimming pool into the opposing team's goal by propelling it with a hockey stick (bat). It originated in england in 1954 when alice cleverley, the founder of the newly formed southsea sub-aqua club, invented the game she called octopush as a means of keeping the club's members interested and active over the cold winter months when open-water diving lost its appeal. Underwater hockey is now played worldwide.
